Teach students how to perform a PT/INR test to determine the clotting tendency, or coagulation, of the blood.
- A prothrombin time (PT) test checks for bleeding problems in a patient, and is also used to determine if an anti-coagulant medication is working for a patient.
- International Normalized Ratio (INR) is a blood test that measures how much warfarin, an anticoagulant medication (brand names Coumadin, Jantoven, or Marfarin) is in a patient's blood at the time of a test.
- A PT/INR test is used to monitor the efficacy of blood thinning products. Patients on anticoagulation medication must be tested to make sure their INR is in a specific iNR test range, as determined by their physician.
